Saturn . How to Install an Air Max Filter in a C230The Mercedes Benz C230, like all combustion engine vehicles, must draw air into the combustion chamber in order to operate. Dust, dirt and other particulates are drawn in along with this air, and the only thing keeping them out of the combustion chamber is the air filter. An Air Max maximum-flow filter tends to do a good job of trapping these particles without choking air flow to the engine, ideally resulting in better fuel mileage. Difficulty:Moderately Easy Instructions Things You'll Need Air Max air filter designed to fit your specific model year of C230 Step by Step : 1 Pull the hood release lever next to the driver's seat. Raise the hood and prop it open with the support arm. 2 Locate the air filter box. On the C230, the air filter box is just to the left of the engine, and it is contoured so that the right side of the box hugs the left side of the engine. You can also identify it by the thick, ridged plastic tube that runs from the front of the air filter box to the intake manifold. 3 Locate the four silver metal clips around the lid of the air filter box and flip them all up. Lift the lid off the air filter box and set it aside. 4 Pull the old air filter out of the air filter box. If you're not entirely sure that you're ready for a new filter, examine the old one closely. If it looks relatively clean, you could consider putting it back in and using it for a while longer. Otherwise, discard it. 5 Place the Air Max filter in the air filter box. 6 Replace the lid to the air filter box and snap down all of the metal clips. 7 Hold the hood while you lower the support arm, then close the hood firmly. Tips & Warnings The specific size of air filter required for your C230 depends on its model year. You can consult your owner's manual to determine this size, but most auto parts stores maintain comprehensive parts directories and can quickly find the right one for you.

But when this filter becomes clogged, it will reduce the air flow through the engine, which reduces your miles per gallon. For optimal fuel mileage, you should check this filter every time you change your engine oil and replace it whenever it is visibly dirty. Difficulty:Moderately Easy Instructions Step by Step : 1 After opening the hood, locate the air filter box, which is just to the rear right corner of the engine. It is connected to the engine via a thick plastic tube. 2 Remove the tube clamp that joins the plastic tube to the air filter box. The tube clamp is a metal ring with a simple clasp on it. To release the clasp, slide the tip of a flat-head screwdriver in the opening and twist it to either side. The clamp will loosen, allowing you to pull away the tube from the air filter box about an inch or so. 3 Remove the two metal screws on the right side of the air filter box. They're located along the seam where the lid meets the bottom of the box. 4 Slide the lid to the left about a half inch; it won't go much farther than that. When it's as far to the left as possible, lift it off. 5 Pull the old filter out of the box. Give it a close look if you'd like, and if it doesn't appear particularly dirty, put it back in. Otherwise, discard it. 6 Put in the new, clean filter in the old one's place. 7 Put the lid back down so it's just to the left side of the bottom of the air filter box, then slide it to the right until it snaps into place. 8 Replace both screws on the right side. 9 Slide the plastic tube back onto the air filter box and squeeze the sides of the tube clamp together to lock it on. Tips & Warnings If you tend to drive in unusually dusty areas such as on dirt or gravel roads, you might need to replace your air filter more often than is recommended. Filter replacement guidelines vary by filter manufacturer, but in general, the best way to tell if it's time for a new filter is to visually inspect it.
